Jim Jones, Ron Browz, Juelz Santana - Pop Champagne
As one rapper friend of mine keenly observed in a phone conversation the other day, the reason many of these Auto-Tuned songs sound terrible is because you need to possess a certain level of vocal talent in order to effectively utilize Auto-Tune (Think Cher). It was originally designed to enhance, rather than mask, poor singing [...]

VIDEO: Stax Brix - Stepping Stone
Stax Brix could just be another hustler from the heartbeat but the Rapper/ Street Poet has risen above expectations. The self made artist started his own label Dirty Pockets Productions to push his brothers (Balla P) music. When Balla P was incarcerated for armed robbery and sentenced to ten flat he had to adjust his plans. He decided to move from behind the scenes and fill the void in front of the mic himself. Overcoming and adapting to unexpected hardships has become a skill and part of his survival. Never wanting to be in the spotlight himself Stax spends the majority of his time helping artist & political causes through his promotion company. Stax tries to bridge the gap between current events and the powers that be. A near impossible mission in today's politically correct culture and mindless bubble gum rap. Part of Stax Brix rise is due to his emphasis on new media and creating his own buzz. A skilled promoter who argues like a politician. The right mindset and a new approach has Stax starting the year with several opportunities.

Bun B Praises Too Short, Pays Hip Hop Honor Tribute
On this evening's airing of Vh1's Hip Hop Honors, viewers will see Too Short honored, among Slick Rick, Cypress Hill, De La Soul and Naughty By Nature. Speaking with HYPEREPORT late last week, Bun B spoke about the significance of his longtime musical brother in Hip Hop.
"For a person like Too Short, who has been around since I started listening to rap, to finally get his just due...there's so many others in this industry that don't get our proper respect and our proper appreciation. I don't think there's one emcee who's rapping today who hasn't been able to express his freedom, and express himself and his opinions, that doesn't get that directly from a person like Too Short," Bun said. In 2007, UGK did "Life Is 2009", a song paying tribute to a Too Short classic, and his unique delivery.
Bun went on to defend Short's lyrics and legacy in the mainstream. "People think it's just all about bitches and hoes and shit like that. But anybody who really listens to a Too Short record knows, he's really one of the first people to show you what it's really like living in that Oakland, Bay area. With songs like 'The Ghetto' [click to read] showing you the poverty and what people were going through, you'll see there's more to the man than you thought."
The man who helped make Texas tangible to many listeners added, "When you look at the De La Souls and the Slick Ricks, it's important that you look at the Too Shorts too, because a Too Short in Oakland has just as much significance as a Slick Rick in New York or a Naughty By Nature in New Jersey."
Hip Hop Honors airs tonight at 10pm EST on Vh1. Bun will join a cast of others in paying tribute to Too Short.

Rage To Perform During Democratic National Convention
Rage Against The Machine will perform for free on August 27 at the Denver Coliseum during the Democratic National Convention, in conjunction with the Iraq Veterans Against the War and Tent State University.
The performance, according to Billboard.com, is part of the Tent State Music Festival to End the War, and also features Flobots, the Coup, State Radio and Wayne Kramer. The event begins at 11:00 AM, and has no age requirements.
Fans can sign up for tickets, which will be given away free by lottery, by presenting a photo ID at Cuernavaca Park at the university's campus starting August 24 through August 26 from 11:00 AM to 6:30 PM.
Rage is keeping it fair, as the group will also perform on September 3 in Minneapolis - the same week the Republican National Convention takes place. Bassist/guitarist for the group, Tom Morello, has also said he intends to perform with Steve Earle at a union rally in the Twin Cities on September 1 (Labor Day).
Rage Against the Machine, noted for its political subject matter, as well as its incorporation of Hip Hop in its music, reunited at last year's Coachella festival, seven years after the group split. They also headlined last year's wildly successful Rock The Bells tour series.

Illa J To Release Album Produced By Brother J Dilla
Delicious Vinyl Records, the label that helped late producer J Dilla get his start in the game, will be releasing an album from Dilla's brother Illa J [click to read] . The 21-year-old younger brother of the late producer has relocated to Los Angeles from Detroit after Dilla's death. Since the move, Illa J has used his brothers equipment to create a studio called Yancey Boys Studio. There, using unreleased beats from Dilla, Illa J has crafted an album of his brother's beats and his own signing and rapping.
"From '95 through '98 Jay Dee was my go-to guy for hot beats and remixes. He was always making beats, always. So there was a select amount of tracks that he composed for me during that time, only they never got used. When I finally met Illa J last year, I gave him a CD containing those unreleased beats," said Mike Ross, founder of Delicious Vinyl.
Illa J adds, "Dilla was 12 years older than me. So back in the day in Detroit, I was just a little kid, sitting on the stairs in our house, watching him make those first beats for Slum Village. So I always felt my brother's tracks and had an instinct for what I wanted to do over them."
To Ross, who released classic records from Young MC, Tone-Loc and Masta Ace, the Yancey family is simply musical. "Illa J can write, sing, play and rap. Not just a little bit of each - he's really the complete package! And anyone who loves Jay Dee's music is going to flip out when they hear what his younger brother's been laying down. For over a decade these beats have been waiting in the vault for this moment. It's like Jay Dee made these tracks with an extrasensory purpose, so that Illa J could make this album. There is no question that this is exactly what they were meant for. These beats belong to Illa J, they're his birthright, and I really believe Jay Dee would be proud of what his brother is doing."
The album has yet to be given a title or release date.
