A Nigerian man charged Saturday with attempting to blow up a U.S. airliner on Christmas Day was listed in a U.S. terrorism database after his father told State Department officials that he was worried about his son’s radical beliefs and extremist connections, officials said.

The suspect, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, was granted a two-year tourist visa by the U.S. Embassy in London in June 2008 and has traveled to the United States at least twice before, officials said. His name was added to a catch-all terrorism-related database last month, when his father reported concerns about his son’s “radicalization and associations” to the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria, a senior administration official said.

Abdulmutallab, 23, was subdued by passengers and crew members aboard Northwest Airlines Flight 253 on Friday after he ignited an explosive device that set his pants leg and part of the airplane, which was preparing to land in Detroit, on fire. The incident marks the latest apparent attempt by terrorists to bring down a U.S. aircraft through the use of an improvised weapon and set in motion a series of urgent security measures that disrupted global air travel during the frenetic holiday weekend.

The past 9-10 years hasn’t really been too kind to the hip-hop community, musically and creatively speaking. In a lot of ways the grit, grime and humble beginnings of rap music in the late 80’s into the 90’s gave way to glitz, glamour, “flashing lights” and “high life” of hip-hop music in this decade. You can thank Jay-Z for that. If you can’t relate to the struggles of daily life in the projects I guess it’s not too bad to rap about the good life with nice cars and hot women. br / br /That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but when everyone else starts copying that it gets too much. Besides, rap music originated in the streets, not the mansions. It feels like forever that we had a good Wu related album. But in reality it’s not THAT long. Ghostface Killah had 2 great albums in this decade with Fishscale and Supreme Clientele. But with hardcore rap it’s been way too long or at least not too often. It seemed like in the 90’s we had at least 3 excellent hardcore-gangsta rap albums a year. But now it’s become watered-down “safe” top 40 rap music. While 50 Cent had a nice boom there with that one album of his, lyrically speaking and let’s be honest here, the guy was no more creative or clever than a 15 year old kid. But at least he had some catchy beats to keep you interested. br / br /Now this album from Raekwon has been delayed a couple of times. I think this release date is just about right, just after Labor Day weekend. Plus the hype only built up after hearing a couple of songs. On ‘House Of Flying Daggers’ you hear GZA’s verse from ‘Clan In Da Front’ from the first Wu album ‘Return To The 36 Chambers’. Just hearing this song makes you realize that you have something great going on here. One of the best songs from Rae Wu in many years. Everybody here makes an appearance and most importantly they all brought back the fire, the desire and the hunger to be great once again. Lyrically speaking they’ve went back in time at least 10-15 years to when they always writing edgy and slick lyrics. The beats are also back too. It’s almost as if the mediocrity of the last 10 years never happened. I can’t put enough emphasis on this but this is a true return to form Rae and his Wu counterparts. I know that term is thrown around rather loosely but in this case I really mean it. Now I hope they can sustain this for future releases. Because not only do WE need it, but the hip-hop industry needs it just as much, if not more. It may be only a day old as I write this. But this album will go down as a classic. br / br / br /

Viper Records President and recording artist, Immortal Technique will be performing on November 20th at the DNA Lounge in San Francisco to raise money for Omeid International, a human rights advocacy organization, which currently plans to construct an orphanage and medical center near Kabul, Afghanistan.

Miami, Florida US – November 13, 2008 – On Thursday, November 20, revolutionary and powerhouse independent rapper, Immortal Technique, will perform live on stage at DNA Lounge, returning to the Bay to raise funds in support of a badly needed orphanage and medical center in war torn Afghanistan. Working closely with human rights advocacy organization, Omeid International, Tech's performance raises funds earmarked for developing the Amin institute in Kabul where some of the two million orphaned and 60,000 homeless children of Afghanistan will receive full-scale rehabilitation from the devastating effects of war. Besides just doing the benefit show Immortal Technique is pledging $10,000 of his own money and is traveling to the war torn heartland of Afghanistan to assure the final stages of construction are completed.

Known for his fiery assaults on corruption, racism, classism and oppression, Technique has also garnered a reputation for backing his politics with action, historical context and personal responsibility. The Institute, which is set to begin operating in March 2009, will provide safe housing, education, medical and psychological care and some sense of hope to twenty of these displaced children.

Los Angeles, CA – October 30, 2008 – After co-producing and writing the recent BET Hip- Hop Awards, acclaimed producer P. Frank Williams celebrates the airing of his latest American Gangster episode that explores the life of gang member turned author Sanyika "Monster Kody" Shakur. The show airs on Oct. 30th on BET at 10 p.m.

"Back when I was a reporter at the LA Times in the mid 90's I was mesmerized and shocked after reading Sanyika Shakur, nee Monster Kody's autobiography about his life as a gang member in South Central Los Angeles," says Williams. "So after I started producing BET's hit show American Gangster, he was at the top of my list of subjects. And as a California native, I thought it even more important for me to tell this complicated story of how gangs in South Central could produce this beautifully tragic man, especially because gang violence had become worse in LA the last few years."

Williams says he had conflicted feelings after producing the show. "Even as he spoke to youth about avoiding the streets and made a huge transformation from gangster to Black freedom fighter, Monster remains in jail until this day and couldn't avoid drugs and the lure of kicking it with his gang and staying involved in street life. But I remain hopeful that one day soon he will get out and fly right."

This is the second episode of American Gangster produced by Williams, a former Los Angeles Times reporter and former Executive Editor of The Source Magazine. He also produced the highly rated episode on Oakland's Felix Mitchell in season two and will produce another episode of American Gangster later this year about freedom fighter turned bank robber Mutulu Shakur, who is also Tupac Shakur's step father. Williams also recently executive produced a music Mixtape based on the series. The album features Lil' Wayne, Scarface, Akon, Rampage, Mopreme Shakur, Beanie Siegel and many more.

Never one to be boxed in, Williams also won a 2008 NAACP Image Award for co-producing the BET show Celebration Of Gospel. Over the past 10 years, he has worked in newspapers, magazines, TV and even wrote and co-produced the big budget video game 25 To Life.

He previously worked as a development consultant and producer for VH1's prestigious Launch Pad where he pitched, created and put legs on shows in development. His TV writing/producing credits include the 2008 BET Honors on BET, 2008 BET Awards on BET, 2008 NAACP Image Awards on FOX, 2005 Hip Hop Honors on VH1, 2004 VIBE Awards on UPN and numerous other shows. DJ Shadow Talks James Brown, Ditching His MPC

When he's not deejaying and producing, Qunnum Projects founder DJ Shadow likes to hit the blogosphere via his website, DJShadow.com. When asked to clarify his recent remarks to Remix magazine, Shadow blogged that the move away from the Akai MPC series he used for so long was more about change than anything.

"I felt as though The Private Press was the best record I could ever make on the MPC, and I was eager for a change," says Shadow. "It was also important to me that I not get stagnant and start repeating things I had done in the past. So I switched it up and forced myself to 'go back to school,' in a sense. I felt that if I refused to rely on the MPC and learn new techniques my music would change, for better or worse, and change was what I craved most."

Shadow added that he does plan on bringing some form of MPC technology back into the mix, because the sequencer/sampler is still "the easiest way I have found to quickly get a groove going."

One thing DJ Shadow has apparently not abandoned is his love of all things related to the late Soul legend James Brown. Shadow was present this summer when Christie's auctioned off millions of dollars worth of Brown memorabilia. Among the lot was a plaque issued from Georgia Governor and future US President, Jimmy Carter. Carter commended Brown for his 1972 recording, "King Heroin," and added a hand-written thank you note stating, "Thanks for your help with heroin addiction--1972."

When asked about why he would be after such a random piece of memorabilia, Shadow simply replied, "Because he is the Godfather." Christie's reports that the plaque has a realized price of $500. Shadow can also be found as a featured guest on the upcoming album from The Mighty Underdogs entitled Droppin' Science Fiction.

The acronym and the promise to Always Keep It Real, gave him a name and a prophecy to live by. AKIR grew up throughout New York City, DC, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Atlanta, and Maryland, theses vast surroundings contributed to his diversified sound and ability to switch it up at any style and dialect that relates to people from all walks of life.

Early Career
AKIR first entered the hip-hop scene as an on-air personality with WNMH 97.9 (Mass.) from 1994 to 1996. In 1998, he ranked 2nd out of 50 in Howard University's Verbal Armageddon, MC competition. AKIR sought to improve his musical talent and began to focus on production. Collaborating with his brother and business partner Southpaw (studio engineer and producer for immortal technique and Viper Records) At the end of 2001 One Enterprises, Ltd (A Production company Akir co-owns) released Street Edition Vol. 1& 2 which have moved over 15,000 copies to date.

On this evening's airing of Vh1's Hip Hop Honors, viewers will see Too Short honored, among Slick Rick, Cypress Hill, De La Soul and Naughty By Nature. Speaking with HYPEREPORT late last week, Bun B spoke about the significance of his longtime musical brother in Hip Hop.

"For a person like Too Short, who has been around since I started listening to rap, to finally get his just due...there's so many others in this industry that don't get our proper respect and our proper appreciation. I don't think there's one emcee who's rapping today who hasn't been able to express his freedom, and express himself and his opinions, that doesn't get that directly from a person like Too Short," Bun said. In 2007, UGK did "Life Is 2009", a song paying tribute to a Too Short classic, and his unique delivery.

Bun went on to defend Short's lyrics and legacy in the mainstream. "People think it's just all about bitches and hoes and shit like that. But anybody who really listens to a Too Short record knows, he's really one of the first people to show you what it's really like living in that Oakland, Bay area. With songs like 'The Ghetto' [click to read] showing you the poverty and what people were going through, you'll see there's more to the man than you thought."

About Mulatto Patriot

Mulatto Patriot was born in Hyde Park on the Southside of Chicago, where he was raised by the influential sounds of Jazz, moody blues, and soulful house, eventually evolving into a deep-rooted passion for Hip-Hop. His music aspirations lead him to study at Full Sail World Education in Orlando where he improved his production and learned about the business. In 2003, MP returned to Chicago and launched his own production house, Mulatto Patriot Productions. He began engineering and producing for a variety of artists and experienced much success. Its About Time: Run DMC Nominated For Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame

There are nine nominees for next year’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremonies, and after a long time coming, seminal rap group Run DMC is now one of them.

The group is up against Metallica, the Stooges, Jeff Beck, Wanda Jackson, Little Anthony and the Imperials, War, Bobby Womack, and Chic. Only five winners will be chosen, the Associated Press reports. They will be announced in January and inducted on April 4 in Cleveland. For the first time ever, tickets to the show will be made available to the public.

Though Run DMC is the only rappers for consideration this year, they certainly aren’t expected to be “out the running.” In 2007, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five were the first rap act to be inducted into the hall of fame, opening up the possibilities for hip hop.

Run DMC suffered the tragic lost of their dee-jay, Jam-Master Jay in 2002. The group is best known for the 1986 singles, “My Adidas” and “Walk This Way” featuring Aerosmith.

What Happened To G. Dep?

G. Dep, the former Bad Boy Records “Harlem Shake” pioneer, has seen better days. Today World Star Hip Hop posted a video of the rapper, who’s been under the radar for years, sitting in a park in New York discussing his desperate strides toward making a comeback.

Most recently, Dep dropped the DJ E.Nyce–hosted mixtape Deponomics. Now he says, “We got the G.Ometry coming soon. We’re trying to holla at Primo [for beats].”

The Harlem native started off as a “cameo rapper” on Bad Boy, before dropping his critically acclaimed debut album, Child of the Ghetto, in 2001. The song featured the hit single “Special Delivery” and "Let's Get It," made the whole world do a goofy dance called the Harlem Shake, and catapulted Dep into blinding star status.

But soon Dep (along with Loon and Black Rob, other fellow Bad Boy artists from the early millennium) quickly saw his career dissolve. On January 15, 2007, Dep was arrested for breaking a display cell phone during an argument with a T-mobile rep, the New York Daily News reported. Dep’s bail was $750. Unable to pay it, he remained locked up in N.Y.’s Rikers Island for 23 days.

Many fans wondered how did things get so bad. Dep admitted to the Daily News that before Child of the Ghetto, he signed a $350,000 five-album contract with Sean “Diddy” Combs.

“There’s a lot of things I should have looked into,” Dep told the Daily News. “At the time, I didn’t think about it too much…. When you got P. Diddy pulling up in the Johnson projects in a sky-blue Bentley, you don’t ask a lot of questions.”

Dep eventually blew the money and fell victim to a drug addiction.

In the World Star Hip Hop video, Dep— wearing a brown hoodie and looking somewhat lost—said that he accepts his current standstill on the label.

“Right now, the situation over there is like, if you’re not in motion, you’re in slow motion,” he said. “So, slow motion is better than nothing. So right now we’re on our grind. We just gon’ get our thing going and y’all gon’ see it live…whenever it happens…it’s going to happen sooner than later.”

Music's Most Fateful Flights

Mews of the plane crash over the weekend that killed four people and severely injured former Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker and noted turntablist Adam Goldstein (aka DJ AM) serves as yet another sobering reminder that in the ever-unpredictable world of celebrity culture, fate can and often does play a significant hand.

This seems especially true when it comes to pop music, which over the decades has seen its fair share of unfortunate life-ending events specifically related to air travel. Some of the most famous have occurred "in the line of duty"--on the way to or from concerts, personal appearances, photo/video shoots, etc.--a fact that not only has magnified the tragedies for fans but also has frozen in time the lives of these stars inside our collective memory banks.

For example, in just a few months--February 3, 1959, to be exact--it'll be the 50 th anniversary of what's generally considered the most well-known of all music-associated plane crashes: the Clear Lake Iowa accident that took the lives of rock and rollers Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and "Big Bopper" J.P. Richardson. Holly was only 22 and Valens hadn't even turned 18 when they perished, and as Don McLean so aptly put it in his song "American Pie," for anyone who grew up during rock's Golden Age, it would always feel like "The Day The Music Died."

Meanwhile, country music fans often point to the March 1963 Tennessee plane crash that took away superstar Patsy Cline along with fellow performers Lloyd "Cowboy" Copas and Harold "Hawkshaw" Hawkins as their own era-stamping equivalent. And soul music fans, not to mention music fans in general, all mourned the loss of Otis Redding (and four members of his backing group the Bar-Kays) after their plane went down near Madison Wisconsin on December 10, 1967--ironically, mere days after Redding had recorded what would be his classic posthumous hit, "Sittin' On The Dock of the Bay."

Sometimes a plane crash can carry added symbolism. When Swing Era bandleader Glenn Miller's plane disappeared on the way to Paris for a scheduled performance for Allied troops fighting in Europe in mid-December 1944, his death became a powerful emblem of American patriotism during World War II. And when Southern rock group Lynyrd Skynyrd's Ronnie Van Zant and guitarist Steven Gaines and backing vocalist Cassie Gaines lost their lives in October 1977 in a crash near Gillsburg Mississippi, it seemed that perhaps the band had had premonitions: their latest album Street Survivors had just been released featuring an original cover (later changed) that depicted the group standing in flames, and was eerily highlighted by a song about death called "That Smell."

As evidenced by the likes of singer-songwriters Jim Croce (1973) and John Denver (1997), former teen idol Ricky Nelson (1985), hard rock guitarist Randy Rhoads (1982), bluesman Stevie Ray Vaughan (1990), and R&B vocalist Aaliyah (2001), musician-associated plane crash deaths cut across all styles and genres. Thankfully, the names of Travis Barker and DJ AM did not have to be added to this fateful list.

Kanye West Steals the Show

The biggest hip hop show in New York City Tuesday night was at a venue no larger than a Brooklyn brownstone. Led by a surprise appearance from Kanye West, downtown Manhattan’s Knitting Factory treated an audience of about 100 underground, hipster rap fanatics to a great G.O.O.D. show.

The night began with producer 88 Keys performing two tracks from his upcoming release The Death of Adam (Decon Records). The Long Island, NY native began with “Handcuff ‘Em”, a witty J-Dilla inspired track about finally finding a woman worth committing to.

The night’s ultimate tease was when Keys broke into “Stay Up (Viagra)”, which features vocals from G.O.O.D. general Mr. West. When his DJ originally dropped the jazzy beat, Keys ordered him to pause so that he could run backstage and bring out the man everyone wanted to hear. When the music returned, Keys, wearing a pink puffy vest, Kanye’s Venetian blind sunglasses, and scarf wrapped snuggly around his neck, jumped onstage, mimicking the Louis Vuitton don right down to his “Jesus Walks” dance and “Stronger” neck whips. There was no Kanye, at least not yet.

Following the disappointment was Massachusetts-bred Termanology and G.O.O.D Music's latest signee, Big Sean, who seems to be the next rapper to fall into the abyss of swagger raps. All three of the songs he performed focused on how fresh he is, the girls he can get, and what he can do with them. The Detroit talent's voice clearly is not ready for the rigors of regular shows as it began to crack halfway through his second song and he lip-synced most of his cult hit “Getcha Some”.

Next at bat and backed by a live band was Bronx rapper Mickey Factz, His glasses, rap style, and calculated awkwardness are going to give many the impression that he’s channeling his inner Lupe Fiasco, which is something even Factz knew and poked fun at.

Midwest upstart Kid Cudi was the highlight of G.O.O.D. Music’s B-team. Cleveland’s internet all-star performed cuts from his A Kid Named Cudi mixtape. In a fuchsia Bathing Ape hat and black t-shirt, Cudi had the crowd eating out of his hands.

As Cudi exited stage right, the new buzz was for the headlining act, Queens MC Consequence, but also for the whispers that Kanye West was in the building. With his ex-fiancé Alexis Phifer close behind him, no less.

Three songs into Consequence’s set he assured the audience that something special was about to happen. “This is a G.O.O.D. Music affair and I got some tricks up my sleeve,” he yelled. That said, DJ Plain Pat played “Gone’’, a track on West’s 2005 Late Registration (Roc-A-Fella) album. And that’s when the energy in the room flew to new heights.

In a grey sweater with a red suspender print, black jeans and sunglasses, a bearded West jumped on stage to rap his verse. When that was through Consequence asked if the crowd would mind if “Kanye gets loose and performs some of his stuff.” The screams and cheers were all the affirmation needed for Pat to get “Can’t Tell Me” blasting from the speakers. “Flashing Lights” synths were the next squeal, followed by West spitting his verse on Young Jeezy’s current smash “Put On” acapella.

Fresh off premiering his heart-wrenching first single from his reported winter release 808’s & Heartbreak (Roc-A-Fella), “Love Lockdown” at the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards, West sang the track again to roaring approval. He concluded with his verse on TI’s “Swagger Like Us” with all his G.O.O.D. artists by his side.

But the night was not over yet. A Tribe Called Quest’s Q-Tip bounced on stage with the energy of a high schooler running through classics like “Award Tour”, “Stressed Out”, and his current single “Gettin’ Up”, closing out the festivities.

MURS TO HIT THE ROAD ON MURS FOR PRESIDENT TOUR

Independent hip-hop stalwart MURS announces his first nationwide, headlining tour in two years, with the first show on October 7th at San Francisco’s newest premier live music venue, The Independent. The tour is to focus on his major label debut “MURS for President” set to hit stores September 30th on Warner Bros. Records.

MURS has been recently making his rounds across the country as a featured act on the “Rock the Bells” tour. His ability to electrify fans and critics alike with his uninhibited stage presence has attracted a number of positive reviews as “the day’s premier stand-alone performance” (LA Times). He looks to bring this same energy into a 36-city circuit, ending on December 11th at the El Rey Theatre in his native Los Angeles.

MURS will also be present at the Democratic National Convention from August 23rd –29th in Denver, CO to provide a youth perspective of the conference. As a field correspondent, c ameras will follow Murs around while he interviews fans, young politicians, and supporters, attends press conferences, gives speeches, and finally performs at the Will.I.Am after-party that will close out the week’s events.

DJ Khaled is set to release his highly-anticipated third album, We Global on Tuesday, September 16, 2008.
DJ Khaled recently leaked “Go Hard,” the 2nd single from the forthcoming new album. “Go Hard” featuring Kanye West and T-Pain can be heard here.

DJ Khaled enthuses about “Go Hard,” “This is the biggest record in music right now ! ‘Go Hard’ is what we doing to survive in this world. This anthem is timeless !!!! There are so many hip hop quotables on this record !!!!!”

Rage show stopped by cops; march and tear gassing ensues

A peaceful concert on the capitol lawn took a turn when rumors started circulating that Rage Against the Machine would play. Supposed headliners Anti-Flag finished up their set and told the crowd: "Stay put: shit's gonna get crazy."

What proceeded can only be described as organized chaos. As fans chanted "Let them play" and "Our Capitol," Rage band members could be seen on the capitol steps arguing with state troopers. After about 15 minutes of chanting and arguing with police, the band walked around the perimeter of the stage and into the crowd.
Grabbing a bullhorn, Zach de la Rocha asked the crowd to be quiet and sit down. He addressed the crowd with anti-war messages and then led the crowd in an a capella sing-a-long of "Killing in the Name" accompanied by bandmate Tom Morello.

As the crowd began to get restless, de la Rocha and Morello led the audience of approximately 2,000-3,000 people on an impromptu march along Cedar Street. Coincidentally, or perhaps on purpose, the Poor Peoples' Human Rights Campaign was also conducting a march. The two marches converged on Cedar Street and collectively moved toward the Xcel Center, where thousands are now congregated.

The crowd is collectively rushing the barricades, yelling and provoking police. Black Bloc protesters have been spotted, and I personally overheard a riot cop telling others he was nervous because one was waving an Anarchy flag. The cop said: "they are here." There have been rumors of tear gas along the march. I'm witnessing someone washing out his eyes right now, but didn't witness any tear gas myself. The person rinsing his eyes out is holding a camera and appears to be a photographer.

UPDATE: Reports from others on the scene indicated that the members of Rage Against the Machine may have ducked out of the march before it advanced into downtown. From where I was standing in the crowd, the impression was that the march was being led by de la Rocha and Morello; however it appears this was not the case. I can confirm that people around me and the people I talked to as I ran up and down the march were under the impression that we were marching with RATM, and many were surprised to catch up to a group with bullhorns and find that they were the Poor Peoples' Human Rights Campaign and not de la Rocha and Morello.

Dr. Dre's Son Found Dead

Andre Young Jr., the 20-year-old son of legendary West Coast rap mogul Dr. Dre, was found dead at his home in Woodland Hills on Saturday morning.

Young reportedly came home around 5 a.m. the morning of his death and was found unresponsive by his mother around 10 a.m. The cause of death is still pending due to an incomplete toxicology report.

A rep for Dr. Dre released a statement today saying, "Dr. Dre is mourning the loss of his son Andre Young Jr. Please respect his family’s grief and privacy at this time."

Dr. Dre, a founding father of modern day hip hop production, is a former member of the West Coast gangsta rap group NWA, and the founder ad CEO of Aftermath Entertainment (Interscope).

Prodigy’s friend and longtime collaborator Alchemist paid a visit to the jailed rapper the other day. Al also found time to blog about his experience.

You know from the second you pull off the highway onto that long, secluded road in the middle of the straight up Ozark woods that this could never, ever, never be a place that any human would willingly choose to go to.

He was a nice enough to stop by the market and pick up some food for P.

We made a stop at the market for some canned vegetables that Pee wanted (you already know the food in there is straight dogshit) and about 20$ in quarters so we could take pictures.

Rage To Perform During Democratic National Convention

Rage Against The Machine will perform for free on August 27 at the Denver Coliseum during the Democratic National Convention, in conjunction with the Iraq Veterans Against the War and Tent State University.

The performance, according to Billboard.com, is part of the Tent State Music Festival to End the War, and also features Flobots, the Coup, State Radio and Wayne Kramer. The event begins at 11:00 AM, and has no age requirements.

Fans can sign up for tickets, which will be given away free by lottery, by presenting a photo ID at Cuernavaca Park at the university's campus starting August 24 through August 26 from 11:00 AM to 6:30 PM.

Rage is keeping it fair, as the group will also perform on September 3 in Minneapolis - the same week the Republican National Convention takes place. Bassist/guitarist for the group, Tom Morello, has also said he intends to perform with Steve Earle at a union rally in the Twin Cities on September 1 (Labor Day).

Rage Against the Machine, noted for its political subject matter, as well as its incorporation of Hip Hop in its music, reunited at last year's Coachella festival, seven years after the group split. They also headlined last year's wildly successful Rock The Bells tour series.
